It was the first time I’d done an abortion and was incredibly scared and I wanted to get it done as soon as possible. I was able to do it comfortably in my home and it was no less comfortable than a normal period. I knew if I waited for the doctor it would be more painful and the baby would be more developed. It doesn’t make sense that this is “woman’s care” in New York State - to not see me until later in my pregnancy. I also had multiple in person doctors cancel on me. I cannot thank Hey Jane enough for supporting me through this decision and helping me so quickly.

What is the Reproductive Health Act in New York?
The Reproductive Health Act (RHA) in New York, passed in January of 2019, was a landmark law that codified the right to abortion in the state. This aligned New York with the protections established by Roe v. Wade, which was overturned in 2022.
The RHA moved abortion from the state's penal code to public health law, ensuring that abortion is treated as healthcare rather than a potentially criminal act.
The RHA also expanded who can perform abortions, allowing licensed healthcare practitioners such as nurse practitioners and physician assistants to provide abortion care, increasing access across the state.
How late can you get an abortion in New York?
You can be prescribed abortion medication, a combination of mifepristone and misoprostol, up to 10 weeks after the first day of your last menstrual period. Estimate how far along your pregnancy is with our online calculator.
If your pregnancy is further along than that, you can get an elective in-clinic procedural abortion until 24 weeks into pregnancy. Beyond that, abortion is only legal in New York if the pregnant person’s life or health is at risk or if the fetus will not survive.

College students, minors, and undocumented immigrants all have the right to get an abortion in New York through these timeframes as well. If you're younger than 18, you can consent to an abortion without notifying a parent.
The abortion pill explained
The abortion pill is actually two medications taken separately—mifepristone and misoprostol. The first medication, mifepristone, blocks the pregnancy hormone (progesterone), which stops a pregnancy from growing. The second medication, misoprostol, causes cramping and bleeding to empty the uterus or womb.
For some, this treatment can feel like a heavy period, but for others, it can feel much more intense. Everyone's experience is different.
