What is a yeast infection?

Yeast infections are a type of fungal infection that can affect the vagina and vulva. They're caused by an overgrowth of a type of fungus called Candida, which is normally present in the body in small amounts.

If you think you might have a yeast infection, don't worry—they're actually pretty common, and they're usually easy to treat. Have chronic yeast infections? Our providers understand how frustrating that might be and can help with those too!

Yeast infection symptoms can vary from patient to patient, but typically include:

  • Discomfort and itchiness around the vaginal opening
  • Thick, white, cottage cheese-like vaginal discharge
  • Painful urination
  • Painful vaginal sex

How can I get rid of a yeast infection fast?

Yeast infections are best treated with a prescribed oral antifungal tablet, usually called fluconazole, or an over the counter, short-term course of vaginal cream or suppositories, which are small cone-shaped medications that are inserted directly into the vagina. With oral treatment, you will generally notice an improvement in 24 hours and see total relief in 3 to 7 days.

The most commonly prescribed medications for yeast infections are:

  • Fluconazole (Diflucan), an antifungal pill taken orally
  • Butoconazole (Gynazole), an antifungal cream applied to the infected area

After you fill out our intake form on your phone or computer, your Hey Jane provider will evaluate the whole picture. They’ll connect the dots between different factors to diagnose your yeast infection and provide a range of treatment options that address both your lifestyle and medical needs. This includes discussing your history of prior infections, your current symptoms, and what has or hasn’t worked for you in the past.

Hi! I seem to get yeast infections all the time! Why is this happening?
Katherine
Yeast infections happen when a normally occurring fungus overgrows, and there are a lot of reasons why this can happen! Do you happen to use scented soaps or products around your vulva or in your vagina? They can disrupt your natural pH balance, which can lead to yeast.
