In Illinois the average cost of an abortion is $407-857 (without insurance)*.
However, every abortion is unique and there are several factors that affect the exact cost – like the city and state a patient is in, the gestational age of the pregnancy (as a pregnancy progresses, prices typically increase), the type of abortion (medication or surgical), a person’s insurance coverage, the type of facility (clinic, hospital, or private practice), and whether it’s telehealth or in-clinic care (virtual clinics, like Hey Jane, are often less expensive).

The average price for a medication abortion in IL is $439*, but can be significantly lower if insurance or a virtual provider is used.
A medication abortion (aka the ‘abortion pill’) is a series of two medications taken over 1-2 days. It is considered safer than Tylenol, and is an effective alternative to a surgical abortion for early pregnancies. These medications can be prescribed by a provider either in-clinic or via telemedicine, but in both cases the abortion itself takes place at home. A medication abortion is generally less expensive than a surgical abortion.

In Illinois, the average cost of a surgical abortion is $857*, but ultimately depends on the gestational age of the pregnancy. However, private insurance or state funding (if you qualify) should be able to cover some or all of that cost.
A ‘surgical’ (or aspiration) abortion differs from a ‘medication’ abortion in that it involves a gentle suction to remove the pregnancy from the uterus, and is always an in-clinic procedure. However, both are extremely safe and effective options, and may appeal to patients for different reasons. Surgical abortions are usually more expensive than medication abortions, but in some cases may be the patient’s best option.

In 2017, the Guttmacher Institute found that there were 25 clinics providing abortions across the state of Illinois. Below you will find contact and treatment information for a few of those clinics.
In Illinois, a person has the the right to an abortion for any reason before the pregnancy is considered viable (at about 24 weeks)—and after 24 weeks, a person may still get an abortion if the pregnancy or person’s health is at risk. This right is protected by the Illinois state constitution, and public funding is available for all “medically necessary” abortions. Additionally, private insurance companies are required to cover abortion care in Illinois, and abortion via telemedicine is also allowed.
For some, the cost of an abortion (and potential travel expenses involved) presents a financial barrier to getting care—which is where abortion funds come in. These organizations are available to people who need help paying for their abortions, and often work directly with clinics to ensure access to for all their patients.

The decision to get an abortion—and where—is very personal. But there are a few factors you can consider when looking for a provider, like gestational age cutoffs, pricing, location, convenience, insurance coverage, and reputation. Be wary of crisis pregnancy centers, which are fake clinics.
