What causes bacterial vaginosis (BV)?

BV can occur when the balance of “good” and “harmful” bacteria in your vagina is disrupted by factors like:

• Douching
• Sexual activity
• Using soaps or scented products in the vagina

You cannot get BV from sources like toilet seats, bedding, or swimming pools.
