What is herpes?
Herpes, aka herpes simplex virus, is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) that affects an estimated 1 in 8 people between the ages of 14 and 491. There are two types of herpes virus: HSV-1 and HSV-2. HSV-1 is typically associated with oral herpes, while HSV-2 is commonly associated with genital herpes, although either type can cause sores in either location.
While sores around the mouth and/or genital area are typically associated with herpes infections, symptoms and frequency of outbreaks can vary greatly from person to person. Even without visible symptoms, herpes can still be transmitted to sexual partners.
Oral herpes (HSV-1) symptoms often include:
- Small, painful sores or blisters in or around the mouth (aka cold sores)
- Flu-like symptoms such as fever, body aches, and swollen glands
Genital herpes (HSV-2) symptoms often include:
- Small, painful sores or blisters around the genitals or anus
- Itching and/or burning sensations
- Flu-like symptoms such as fever, body aches, and swollen glands
How does Hey Jane treat herpes?
Herpes can be treated with FDA-approved, prescription antiviral pills and/or topicals. Treating herpes can lead to fewer and shorter painful outbreaks and a decreased risk of transmission to sexual partners, so it’s important to seek medical care quickly.
Your Hey Jane provider will recommend the best option to effectively treat the infection based on your symptoms, past medical history, and any concerns about potential treatment options. They can also provide guidance and treatment options to help you manage your symptoms, and to reduce the frequency and severity of outbreaks. If you have any questions during treatment, just ask! We’re here to help alleviate your symptoms and get you feeling better, fast.
