Misoprostol is the second medicine taken for a medication abortion. When used in combination with mifepristone, it’s 98% effective in ending a pregnancy in the first trimester.
Misoprostol, also called Cytotec, has been used as an abortion medication since the late 1980’s and early 1990's. At that time, misoprostol was approved only to treat peptic ulcers, but women in areas with restrictions to abortion access discovered the side effect of uterine cramping and vaginal bleeding. In the United States, misoprostol was FDA-approved for medication abortion treatment in 1996.
How does misoprostol work?
Misoprostol causes the uterus (or womb) to contract, causing cramping and bleeding to empty the contents of the uterus, thus ending a pregnancy. When taken with the other medication often used for medication abortion treatment, mifepristone, it’s 98% effective in ending pregnancy in the first trimester.
To use misoprostol, we recommend meeting with an abortion provider who can prescribe the medications and ensure the process is completed safely. In 24-48 hours after taking 200mg mifepristone, the medication which ends the pregnancy, you’ll take four 200mcg tablets of misoprostol. Misoprostol causes uterine cramping and bleeding. Generally, you’ll experience vaginal bleeding within about 6-24 hours after taking the misoprostol, and heavy bleeding can last for a few hours.
Vaginal bleeding and cramping are expected. They mean the treatment is working.
Misoprostol can also cause other side effects for about 24 hours after taking it. None of these side effects are dangerous, but they can be uncomfortable.
What are the side effects of misoprostol?
Misoprostol side effects include:
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Upset stomach and abdominal pain
- Vaginal bleeding or spotting
- Heavy, menstrual-like cramps
Over-the-counter pain medication, heating pads, and other comfort measures can help with these side effects, if you experience them.
If any of these symptoms persist after about a week or increase in intensity, contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency care.
Studies show that people are able to safely manage medication abortion treatment at home without a clinic visit, but your provider may request you follow up in-person based on their clinic policies and your health history.
How do I get misoprostol?
Misoprostol should only be taken when prescribed by a medical provider. To buy misoprostol online, use a professional telehealth abortion provider. This will ensure your process is safe and effectively ends your pregnancy. You can also meet with an abortion provider in a clinic where they can administer the medications during the visit or give them to you to take at home.
How to get an abortion at home
Laws around abortion telehealth services change frequently and differ state to state. To find options available to you, check here.
Hey Jane provides telehealth medication abortion sevices and abortion pills online for adults that are less than 10 weeks along in their pregnancy. Check that you are eligible for services here and speak with one of our licensed medical providers. If approved, we’ll send your medications to the address of your choice (as long it’s in one of the states where we’re operating) to you in an unmarked box to protect your privacy. They should arrive on your doorstep in about 1 to 5 days.

Why Hey Jane cares
Hey Jane supports those seeking options for their pregnancy and aims to make patients feel informed about their choices. We offer loads of resources and provide accurate information about abortion and the process.
By offering telehealth abortion services and abortion pills online, we eliminate the need to find an in-person clinic—which can be difficult, especially as the number of abortion clinics declines and wait times increase.
We also offer financial assistance to those who can’t afford our abortion services, through our abortion fund partner program. Plus, all Hey Jane patients have an automatic support network through The Lounge, our private peer-to-peer community forum available to patients past and present.
If you have any questions about Hey Jane—or finding the best option for you—feel free to text us directly at (405) 643-7957.

Yes! Hey Jane is one of the first clinics to offer safe, effective and completely legal abortion care through telemedicine. We have served thousands of satisfied patients since launching in January 2021. Check out real feedback from past patients. You can also rest assured knowing that we have been independently certified by the National Abortion Federation, and LegitScript, the leading verification system for online healthcare. We've even been covered by major news outlets, including New York Times, Forbes, Tech Crunch, USA Today, and Shape.
Medication abortion (also called the abortion pill) is a safe and effective way to end an early pregnancy. It was approved by the FDA in 2000 to end pregnancies up to 10 weeks. Today, nearly 40% of abortions in the US are done with medications. The simple treatment involves taking two medicines over a couple days.
The first medicine you take is mifepristone, which blocks the pregnancy hormone (progesterone) and stops the pregnancy from growing. Then, 24-48 hours later you take a second medicine, called misoprostol. Misoprostol causes cramping and bleeding to empty the uterus.
You can expect bleeding like a heavy period. Taken together, these two pills work up to 98 out of 100 times to end an early pregnancy.
After you take mifepristone (the first medication), you must complete the abortion. If treatment with medication does not work the first time, you may have the option to repeat the medicines or you will need an in-clinic procedural abortion. Hey Jane will be with you every step of the way to make sure you get the support and care you need.
No sedation or general anesthesia needed.
Hey Jane treats patients up to 10 weeks of pregnancy.
You may have different options available to you depending on where you live (and the laws in your state). It may be harder to get an abortion after 11 or 12 weeks of pregnancy in some states, so it’s important to try to have the abortion as soon as possible, if that’s what you choose.
If you might continue your pregnancy, start taking a daily prenatal vitamin.
Be careful when looking for a reliable health center. There are fake clinics called ‘crisis pregnancy centers,’ managed by anti-abortion activists. At these facilities, they may not offer you all the facts about your pregnancy options. Visit our Resources page for more.
- For now, we're offering treatment for people in California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Virginia, or Washington. We're expanding to more states soon.
- People who are 18 and older.
- People who have a gestational age of 10 weeks or less. Gestational age is how long you've been pregnant. It's measured from the first day of your last menstrual period.
- People who are medically eligible.
If you have any of the following, you might not be able to get treatment with Hey Jane:
- Irregular periods
- History of an ectopic pregnancy or tubal ligation (having your tubes tied)
It's rare to have a medical condition that would make medication abortion unsafe. Prior to getting treatment with Hey Jane, a provider will go over your medical history to make sure treatment with Hey Jane is safe for you.
Hey Jane provides care, regardless of immigration status, and you can provide any form of ID that has your name, photo, and date of birth. You must be the pregnant person to complete our intake forms, and speak to our care team.
If you are under 18, visit ineedana.com for more information about the laws in your state and how to access the treatment you need. For legal support, call or text Jane's Due Process' hotline: (866) 999-5263.
The cost of treatment with Hey Jane will vary depending on what services your receive and how you pay. There are two ways to pay for care: using your insurance, or through Hey Jane's sliding-scale offering.
Pay through insurance: If you use your insurance, our team will help you understand your expected coverage and costs. We currently select insurance plans and are actively working on expanding our coverage.
Get sliding-scale pricing: We take a tiered approach to pricing — your price is determined by your personal and financial circumstances. Sliding scale pricing is available for all Hey Jane services.
At this time, we accept payment via credit card, debit card, or cash card. You can also use your HSA/FSA. If you need financial assistance, we have partnered with abortion funds in select states to help support eligible Hey Jane patients.
Occasionally, a sonogram or lab work may be needed to ensure that treatment with Hey Jane is right for you or for diagnostic purposes following your treatment. While not covered in your payment to Hey Jane, we'll walk you through obtaining care and provide transparency on your options every step of the way.
